Food for Friends Red Deer

Stores that accept food cards:

All potential Food for Friends clients must, be referred from an approved agency and complete an application form to see if they are eligible to receive the food card.

When using a food card at a grocery store participants get to maintain their choice of product and select their own nutrient dense groceries; groceries that a family can build a meal around. They are free to select chicken thighs, heads of lettuce, fresh fruit and are not limited to items that are non-perishable. Only non-taxable food items may be purchased with the food card; most staples are non-taxable while most junk food and prepared foods are taxed.

As society continues to progress, new challenges emerge and traditional sources of getting food to people who need it are failing to keep up. The cards allotted through Food for Friends are not only a more discreet method of distributing food they are far more efficient. This program cuts out the need for food truck deliveries, warehouse storage and hundreds of volunteer hours.

The executive director of Operation Sharing, Stephen Giuliano who oversees Woodstock Ontario’s Food for Friends program, said that "We have been able to provide highly controlled, non-transferable food cards where people can go and buy all healthy foods, make the choices themselves based on their dietary needs and also gives them confidence in a variety of other areas of the life and it has been running successfully for eight years."

Food for Friends embraces a progressive approach to food distribution that empowers people, provides access to nutritious food and is efficient in process.

Dignity

Participants get to go to the same grocery store and the same line up as everyone else, and pay in a similar way as everyone else. Given low income residents, are not often asked what they want to eat, the opportunity to choose what they eat is a form of empowerment. Furthermore, if someone has special dietary needs, such a diabetes or allergies they are better equipped to meet those needs when being able to choose their own groceries, at a grocery store with the food card.

Time and sustainability are also considered as it may be easier for participants to access their local grocery store or community garden.
